Welcome to the Port Of Tilbury Police Force website.
The Port of Tilbury London Police is a small, specialised police force responsible for policing the Port of Tilbury, owned by the Port of Tilbury London Ltd, a subsidiary of Forth Ports Plc.
Known before 1992 as the Port of London Authority Police, at over 200 years old, it is the oldest police force in the country.
Officers of this force are sworn as constables under the Port of London Act 1968. Jurisdiction for such constables is limited to the port area itself. However if such a constable is pursuing a person from the port area they maintain their powers of a constable for that purpose throughout the UK..
Any serious or major incidents or crimes become the responsibility of the local Home Office police force, Essex Police.
A similar police force may be established at the London Gateway port, a larger deepwater port at present under construction further downstream.
